(Longview, TX) The Longview Public Library will showcase seven classic films from 1939 next week in conjunction with Longview’s Historic Depot Days. Admission to the movies is free and popcorn will be served. The film festival will take place May 8 – 10, 2014. Movies include Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, Babes in Arms, Dark Victory, and Goodbye Mr. Chips. The movies will be shown in the Longview Public Library Moeschle Room, 222 W. Cotton St. A detailed schedule can be seen below.
“The construction of the Historic Longview Depot was a major project for Longview when it took place in 1939 and 1940, so we are pleased that the Longview Public Library can help take a look back to some of the major films taking place at that time. In particular, 1939 was a historically significant year for film with some of the most well-known and beloved movies being made at that time,” says Kara Spitz, Assistant Director of Community Services.
In addition to the train-themed activities, AlleyFest & Historic Depot Days will include a historic remembrance of life in Longview when the train depot officially opened in 1940. There will be Depot Days themed events from community organizations like the Gregg County Historical Museum, Longview World of Wonders, and First Baptist Church among others. The Historic Longview Farmer’s Market will also be open on Saturday, May 10, from 7:30 – 11:30 a.m. at the corner of High St. and Cotton St.
This year, the City of Longview and Longview Main Street are joining forces to celebrate AlleyFest & Historic Depot Days on May 9 – 10, 2014. Admission to the Historic Depot Days events and activities are free, however there is a charge for AlleyFest.
