Rededication of Cargill Long Park Trail on 40th Anniversary
(Longview, TX) The City of Longview will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Cargill Long Park Trail at 2 p.m., Friday, January 18, 2013. The dedication ceremony will be held at the northern entrance to the trail, located at 3112 N. Fourth St.
The 3-mile trail was originally dedicated on January 19, 1973. The trail was created as a “Rails to Trails” project, converting an old section of the Port Bolivar and Iron Ore Railroad into a recreational asset for the entire community. The land was donated to the City of Longview by Robert and Pauline Cargill.
The trail originally stretched from Hwy 80 to Holleybrook Drive. In 2003, the trail was expanded from Hollybrook Drive to Fourth Street. The Cargill Long Park Trail was the first key portion of Longview’s Master Trail Plan and served as an impetus for future trail development throughout the city.
