False Alarms

False Alarms impact the community by causing alarm apathy and complacency, disruption to production and lost time, tying up equipment and personal during a false alarm response, and the financial impact of fuel or equipment availability.

There are essentially three types of False Alarms:
  • Unintentional False Alarm: This includes alarms that are caused by fumes from cooking, steam, tobacco smoke, dust, etc.
  • False Alarm due to Malfunction: These are alarms due to faults with the equipment.
  • Malicious False Alarms: Include but are not limited to hoax calls or pull station activation.
In an effort to reduce the number of false alarm notification, the City of Longview has adopted a False Alarm ordinance. There will be no fee for the first four chargeable false alarms in a calendar year.  For the 5th and subsequent false alarms there will be a fee of $250.00 per chargeable false alarm. Alarm users must either appeal, as provided in Section 40-88 of the City Ordinance, or pay assessed service fee(s) within thirty days of receipt of notice.
