Committee History: The Unity and Diversity Committee was originally conceived as the Race Relations Committee in 1995 by community members who were concerned by the lack of open and honest dialogue about race relations in our community. The Committee believes that a fundamental goal of a just society is equal opportunity and fair treatment of its members. It was the resolution of the members to create a setting conducive to critical evaluation of local, state, and national race relations. The transition from the Race Relations Committee to the Unity and Diversity Committee was a logical, organic step in a developing community’s responsibility to recognize the needs of a diversifying population of residents.
