As winter time approaches so does the need to remind everyone of some important tips to stay safe this year.
Make sure to have your chimneys cleaned and inspected for damage such as cracks or missing parts. Check for foreign objects such as fallen debris or bird nests that may be present inside the chimney flue. It is recommended that a professional chimney sweep be used to provide any cleaning and maintenance that is needed.
Have your furnace unit cleaned and inspected by a professional repair service to check for proper operation. This is especially important if your furnace works off of natural gas or propane. An improperly operating furnace can produce carbon monoxide that may fill a residence with the deadly gas. You should never use your gas appliances to heat your house. Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check outside for air vents that may be blocked by leaves or other debris.
When using space heaters, they should be located at least three (3) feet away from all combustible material. Never use an extension cord with an electric space heater; the heater should be plugged directly into the wall. Purchase space heaters that have tip-over protection that will turn the heater off.
Remember the four (4) Ps; people, pets, pipes, plants. All of these may fall victim to freezing weather if not properly cared for.
