City of Longview Plans Community Juneteenth Celebrations

Juneteenth News Release Slide

The City of Longview will celebrate the annual Juneteenth holiday with a series of community events on June 10 as well as June 16 and 17.

This year, celebrations will kick off the weekend before Juneteenth on June 10 with a Basketball Tournament and Small Business Expo at the Broughton Recreation Center. The Small Business Expo will offer the opportunity for businesses to showcase and sell their wares.

On Friday, June 16, there will be a Hot Air Balloon Presentation and a Dedication Ceremony for a portion of the Guthrie Creek Trail in Recognition of Frank “Penny” Edwards.

Then, on Saturday, June 17, there will be a Hot Air Balloon Presentation, a Softball Tournament, the Juneteenth Parade, and a Picnic in the Park.

Like Martin Luther King Jr. Day events, the City of Longview will host the Juneteenth celebrations, and City staff have been meeting for months to help plan the events.

While this year’s events are set, residents are encouraged to share what they would want to see for future Juneteenth celebrations through the Juneteenth Community Input Form.

For more information about Juneteenth events you can reach out to Dietrich Johnson in the Office of Cultural Arts at 903-237-1089.  Event information and the Juneteenth input form, can also be found at LongviewTexas.gov/Juneteenth.
