On June 25, 2016 at 2:55 a.m., Longview Police were dispatched to an Unknown Problem in the 500 Block of Mamon Drive. Upon arrival Police were told that a white male, later identified as 31 year-old Sonny Dee Edwards, Jr. of Longview, had come to the home and gained access inside the house.
Police were further advised that Edwards was under a protective order and was not supposed to be at that location. With the help of police, two females inside the home were able to escape through a bedroom window. Longview Police SWAT team and the Crisis Intervention and Negotiations team were activated and arrived at the scene a short time later.
Police learned that Edwards was in possession of several weapons inside the home and at one point fired several rounds at the Police robot causing major damage to the robot. Edwards continued to keep himself barricaded inside the home for several more hours. During this time Police were negotiating with him to come out peacefully.
At 10:36 a.m. Edwards agreed to surrender to Police peacefully. Edwards was taken into custody without further incident. Edwards was transported to the Gregg County Jail and charged with Violation of Protective Order and Criminal Mischief F/3.
I would like to thank my command staff, Assistant Chief Anthony Boone, Lt. Ben Kemper, Lt. Kevin Freeman, and Lt. Paul Hickey, along with the SWAT team and the Negotiators who brought this incident to a safe conclusion for everyone. As you know our SWAT team is a multi-jurisdictional team made up of officers from the Longview Police Department, Gregg County Sheriff’s Office, Kilgore Police Department, and the Longview Fire Department. I would like to thank them as well for their assistance.
